COVID-19 Deaths Spike to 998, Infections Rise to 48,285

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 48,285.

This is an increase of 2,312 from Saturday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 46 bringing the total to 998.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 31,824, followed by Eastern Cape at 5,974, Gauteng at 5,946, KwaZulu-Natal 3,108, Free State 361, North West 523, Mpumalanga 189, Limpopo 227, Northern Cape 114 and unallocated infections 19.

The total number of recoveries to date is 24,364, this translates to a recovery rate of 50.5%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 920,064, this is an increase of 28,395 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Today, we are deeply saddened to report the first death in Mpumalanga.The Western Cape has reported a further 45 COVID-19 related deaths. This brings the total national deaths to 998.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families.
