48 New COVID-19 Fatalities Takes Death Toll to 2,340, Infections Rise to 124,590

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 124,590.

This is an increase of 6,215 from Thursday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 48 bringing the total to 2,340

The Western Cape has the most infections with 57,941 followed by Gauteng at 31,344, Eastern Cape at 21,938, KwaZulu-Natal 7,090, Free State 1,069, North West 3,218, Mpumalanga 855, Limpopo 798, Northern Cape 337 and unallocated infections 0.

The total number of recoveries to date is 64,111 this translates to a recovery rate of 51,5%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,493,104 this is an increase of 33,092 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 48 COVID-19 related deaths- 8 from Eastern Cape and 40 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 2 340. The mortality rate is 1.9%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
