Gauteng Back at Number 2 as COVID-19 Infections Rise to 55,421 while Deaths Increase to 1,210

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 55,421.

This is an increase of 2,430 from Tuesday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 48 bringing the total to 1,210.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 36,021, followed by Gauteng at 7,195, Eastern Cape at 7,154, KwaZulu-Natal 3,347, Free State 401, North West 657, Mpumalanga 207, Limpopo 257, Northern Cape 125 and unallocated infections 57.

The total number of recoveries to date is 31,505, this translates to a recovery rate of 56.8%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 998,400, this is an increase of 30,330 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 48 COVID-19 related deaths: 37 from Western Cape, 9 from the Eastern Cape, and 2 from KwaZulu Natal.This brings the total national deaths to 1210 with a mortality rate of 2,2%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families.
