Gauteng Overtakes Western Cape to Become New COVID-19 Epicentre in SA

Gauteng has surpassed the Western Cape with the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases cumulatively becoming the epicentre of the pandemic in South Africa.

The Health Department on Wednesday has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 224,665.

This is an increase of 8,810 from Tuesday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 100 bringing the total to 3,602.

The Gauteng has the most infections with 75,015 followed by Western Cape at 73,292, Eastern Cape at 42,357, KwaZulu-Natal 17,962, Free State 3,259, North West 7,147, Mpumalanga 2,528, Limpopo 2,131, Northern Cape 974 and unallocated infections 0.

The total number of recoveries to date is 106,842, which translates to a recovery rate of 47,5%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,944,399, this is an increase of 36,867 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 98 COVID-19 related deaths- 18 from KwaZulu-Natal, 15 from Mpumalanga, 18 from Eastern Cape, 47 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 3 600.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
