Al Aqsa High School in Lenasia has scooped first place at the 2019 Gauteng Matriculation Awards.
Al Aqsa won the award for the top independent school in the province.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the matric class of 2019 has achieved a pass rate of 81.3%, from 78.2% in 2018.
Gauteng received the second highest pass rate in the country achieving 87.2%, a 0.7% decline from the previous year.
Speaking Radio Islam, Principal Hamida Moosa says winning the award took a lot of hard work from learners, parents and especially the teachers.
“This is only through Allah’s mercy and His kindness upon us that he has bestowed us with this honour. I stand corrected, I don’t know in the preceding decade, but in the past ten years, this is the first time a Muslim school has taken the top honour in Gauteng.
Moosa says Al Aqsa also achieved a 100% matric pass rate.
“Alhamdulillah our pass rate is 100%. It’s been maintained at 100% for the past ten years. We’ve also been placed in the National Schools report for having a 100% pass rate for the past five years.
Moosa says the school is hoping to improve its current bachelor pass rate from 94% to 100% for the 2020 academic year.
