As the new school academic year gets underway, esteemed Islamic scholar and secretary general of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Ml Ebrahim Bham has stressed the importance of Islamic or Maktab education.

Ml Bham was speaking during the Social Programme on Radio Islam on Thursday.

While many parents and academics highlight the importance of western education, there are concerns that not much emphasis has been placed on Islamic education.

Some parents usually avoid sending their children to madrassa if they have been inundated with a lot of homework from school among other flimsy excuses.

Ml Bham says in todays times the Muslim ummah really needs emphasis on Maktab education.

“If we for example as parents ‘whenever there is a thing to be done, do it madrassa time’. Whenever there is a small thing, small headache, ‘you have to go to school, you can leave the madrassa.’ If we start creating that type of impression upon our children where we regard madrassa, which is supposed to be compulsory, as secondary. We are creating the seed in the mind of our children that deen is not as important as your word, in your worldly matters.”

Ml Bham says children who are refrained from attending madrassa by their parents is a travesty of justice.

“It is so unjust that what we are doing to our children, that we are showing that deen which Allah says in the holy Qur’an: 'enter into Islam whole heartedly'” - (Chaper 2 Verse 208).

During a Hifz Jalsa in Lenasia, renowned Islamic scholar Ml Sulaiman Moola echoed Ml Bham’s concerns saying while many people go to exclusive academic and secular institutions, they become oblivious to the elementary aspects of the holy Qur’an.
