The embattled national carrier, South African Airways, has announced that it plans to sell nine of its Airbus A340 aircraft. This is according to a tender document seeking proposals from potential buyers.

SAA says this decision has nothing to do with the voluntary business rescue process it is currently in. The company said in a statement that it has for some time planned to replace its four-engine aircraft with two-engine ones.

It has, therefore, put some of its aircraft up for sale to accommodate the new Airbus A350-900s the airline recently added to its fleet.

Aviation expert and editor of the SA Flyer Magazine Guy Leitch spoke to Radio Islam. He says this move is long overdue.

“Unfortunately, this move is long overdue. It shouldn’t be seen as part of the strategy being implemented by the business turnaround practitioners.”

Earlier this week Finance Minister Tito Mboweni told business leaders at a Pre-World Economic Forum breakfast that Treasury was trying to find additional financing for the embattled airline.
