SA COVID-19 Infections Hit Half a Million, Deaths Increase to 8,153

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has now topped the half a million mark to 503,290.

This is an increase of 10,107 from Friday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 148 bringing the total to 8,153.

Gauteng has the most infections with 178,119 followed by Western Cape at 96,189, Eastern Cape at 78,782, KwaZulu-Natal 79,607, Free State 22,308, North West 19,714, Mpumalanga 14,681, Limpopo 8,879, Northern Cape 4,961 and unallocated infections 50.

The total number of recoveries to date is 342,461 which translates to a recovery rate of 68%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 3,001,985 this is an increase of 42,450 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 148 COVID-19 related deaths: 36 from Eastern Cape, 40 from Gauteng, 41 from KwaZulu Natal, 24 from Western Cape and 7 from Northern Cape. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 8,153.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
