Western Cape Hits 50,000 COVID-19 Infections, National Deaths Rise to 1,877

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 92,681.

This is an increase of 4,966 from Friday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 46 bringing the total to 1,877.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 50,173 followed by Gauteng at 18,978, Eastern Cape at 14,721, KwaZulu-Natal 4,806, Free State 700, North West 1,957, Mpumalanga 544, Limpopo 521, Northern Cape 232 and unallocated infections 49.

The total number of recoveries to date is 50,326 this translates to a recovery rate of 54.3%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,293,608 this is an increase of 33,174 which were done in the last 24 hours.

Regrettably, we report a further 46 COVID-19 related deaths- 11 from Eastern Cape, 3 from KwaZulu Natal and 32 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 1877. The mortality rate is 2,0%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
