1 Killed 50 Injured in Metrorail Collision in Elandsfontein

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 01-06-2017

ER24 has confirmed one person has killed and at least 50 others injured after two Metrorail trains collided near the Elandsfontein station in Ekurhuleni.

While the exact of the exact cause of the accident is unclear, it’s understood the collision happened when one train rear-ended another this morning.

In a tweet, Metrorail says all train services operating between Pretoria and Johannesburg have been suspended while technicians work on the lanes.

ER24’s Russel Meiring says on arrival at the scene they found numerous carriages of the trains leaning to their sides.

“Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered that one of the drivers of the trains had sustained fatal injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead on the scene.”

Meiring says 50 other patients were found on the scene with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

“Paramedics treated the patients and thereafter transported them to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.”

Meanwhile, Metrorail’s Tony Games says they are working on arranging buses for the thousands of stranded commuters.
