As date for the resumption of Umrah in Makkah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia draws close, at least 16,000 Saudis and expatriates have registered for Umrah  in the first few hours after launching of the Umrah mobile app “I’tamarna”.

In a statement on its Twitter account, the Makkah Emirate says the registration of Umrah pilgrims for the first 10 days has been completed.

The Ministry of Interior announced earlier the gradual resumption of Umrah and visits to the Two Holy Mosques with a limited number of pilgrims, starting from 4 October.

In the first phase, a total of 6,000 pilgrims will be allowed a day to perform the ritual in 12 groups, each consisting of 500 pilgrims.

The first phase allows Umrah for Saudis and expats residing in the Kingdom, before expanding to a bigger capacity in the next stages to allow pilgrims from across the globe.

According to the emirate statement, the Haram in Makkah will be sterilized 10 times in a day.

There will also be sterilization before the entry and after the exit of each batch of pilgrims while  Zamzam water will be distributed to the pilgrims in packaged bottles.

Those intending on performing Umrah are required to register via the “I’tamarna” mobile app.

The app is aimed at enforcing health standards amid the COVID-19 pandemic and making it easier for people to register their bookings for services, accommodation, transport and recreation for Umrah ahead of their arrival in Makkah.
