Alleged Cross-Contamination of Food at Two Top Hotels in KZN

Faizel Patel, 2016-08-11

Concerns have been raised about alleged cross-contamination of food at two top hotels in KwaZulu-Natal following an incident where two Muslim culinary students were denied from continuing their internships after allegedly refusing to shave off their beards.

Yusuf Mohammed and Huzaifah Mohideen were employed at the Elangeni and Maharani Hotel in KZN on a voluntary basis as part of their training to graduate as chefs.

Mohammed claims that while pork and wine is separated from halaal meat in the Elangeni’s freezers, the same cannot be said if separate utensils are used to cook the food.

His concerns were echoed by Mohideen who says that lessons about cross-contamination at the Capsicum Culinary School in KZN  where the duo are studying was extensively covered in their syllabus.

“The restaurants at Maharani and Elangeni claim they are halaal but how do we know they are using separate utensils, equipment and everything to cook the halaal food because they do claim they are halaal, they told me themselves. I never worked at the restaurant but upstairs at the buffet kitchen they also claim they are halaal but they use the same thing for everything, the same equipment, and the same utensils for everything.”

The hotels have declined to comment on the claims at this stage.
