Analyst: SA will Pay Huge Price if Zuma Fails to Resign or be Recalled

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 06-02-2018

A political analyst has told Radio Islam he hopes the African National Congress (ANC) makes the right decision and removes President Jacob Zuma from office to get the country back on track.

Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete announced the postponement of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2018 on the eve of a special meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) on Wednesday which is being seen as the strongest indication yet that this could be the end of the road for Zuma.

Professor Andre Duvenhage says the possibility of Zuma refusing to step down has forced the ANC to take drastic measures to remove Zuma and prevent him from presenting Sona.

“The NEC is going to recall Zuma. Probably will he resist such an attempt, and maybe then they can follow a process or procedure to get rid of Jacob Zuma in Parliament.”

Duvenhage says South Africa is going through very interesting times at the moment.

“If we are going to take a wrong decision, we are going to pay a huge price for this. I’m hopeful that Cyril Ramaphosa may come to power and he can start changing this whole process in South Africa for the better and for the sake of all South Africans.”

Duvenhage says with the 2019 general elections just a year away, it’s critical for the ANC that Zuma is removed as president because a recent Markinor survey has shown the party has a current support base of only 47%.
