ANC Appeals for Calm Following Violence & Acts of Criminality in Joburg CBD

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has appealed for calm and restraint following acts of violence, loss of life and looting of shops suspected to be owned by foreign nationals.

The unrest began on Sunday in Jeppestown, central Joburg and the CBD and has now spread to areas including Fordsburg, Turfontein, Ekurhuleni and Pretoria.

Police say 91 people have so far been arrested amidst a spate of violence and looting.

The ANC has urged communities, both South Africans and foreign nationals not to take the law into their own hands and rather allow those entrusted with law enforcement to take charge of the situation.

Spokesperson Bones Modise says resorting to violence and lawlessness can never be a justifiable way to respond to the situation.

“Criminal elements in our midst who thrive on anarchy and are fuelling the unrests must not be allowed to hijack the legitimate concerns being raised by citizens and non South Africans alike.”

The party has called on law enforcement agencies and the relevant government departments to intensify operations aimed at containing the situation and bringing an end to this lawlessness.
