aQuellé Fails to Clarify if Flavoured Water is Halaal or Haraam

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 15-12-2017

Bottled water company aQuellé has told Radio Islam, they do not add any endorsements on their products and all the ingredients are listed on the label.

Concerns were raised by the Muslim community and halaal certifying bodies in South Africa about whether aQuellé products are halaal following reports that the flavoured bottled water allegedly contain ingredients including alcohol which are not suitable for Muslim consumption.

Muslim’s abide by a strict diet regiment that is set out in the tenets and confines of Islam of what is permissible or not permissible to consume.

In a written response, aQuellé says their range consists of the Natural Spring Water Range, which is pure natural spring water as well as the Flavoured Drinks Range.

“As a member of SANBWA (South African Bottled Water Association), we adhere to their regulations and requirements for bottled water.”

While aQuellé did provide an official response, it failed to address the concerns or questions raised by Radio Islam on whether their products are suitable for Muslim consumption.

On Monday during the South African Halaal Authority (SANHA) Q & A programme, Ml Bilal Nicholson told Radio Islam that the halaal body had written to aQuellé seeking clarification on its favoured water products.

“The most critical ingredient in there is the flavouring that they use. There was some allegations they contain alcohol. To verify this we then wrote to the company and asked them for some disclosure, but they did not accede to our request. Based on that and without any information, how can we give a guarantee that the product is halaal or that the allegations are not true.”

The SANHA Q & A programme is broadcast every Monday on Radio Islam at 7:30pm
