Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Barbara Creecy says there is a lot of work that needs to be done to unite a very diverse and conflicted South African nation.

Creecy was speaking at the Ramadan interfaith ifthar dinner at Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand on Saturday after returning from an African National Congress (ANC) legotla in Irene, Pretoria with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The ifthar dinner initiative brought together people from across different religious and ethnic groups to promote peace, mutual understanding and social cohesion by embracing the concept of ubuntu and reconciliation.

Creecy says if the ifthar dinner could be replicated across the country, it would bring about peace and solidarity among different faith groups.

“There is nowehere else on this earth where people of such diverse faiths, people from such diverse backgrounds can sit together in such harmony and break fast and celebrate all that we have created.”

Other attendees at the ifthar dinner included Gauteng MPL Fasiha Fassan, South African Council of Churches (SACC) Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana and South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Commissioner Shafie Ameermia amongst others.
