Blade Nzimande: “Ramaphosa Wants to Address Matter of Why SA Cannot Produce Own COVID-19 Vaccine”

Faizel Patel – 18/01/2021

(Twitter: @FaizelPatel143)

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says President Cyril Ramaphosa wants to address the matter of why South Africa cannot produce its own COVID-19 vaccine when the country has produced other vaccines before.

Nzimande was briefing the nation on Monday on his department’s plans for the re-opening of higher education institutions amid the resurgence of Coronavirus infections.

The minister urged South Africans to listen to experts on the science around the COVID-19 vaccine and answered a question from a journalist about why South Africa has not produced a Coronavirus vaccine.

“Let me not talk about this matter at all because the president wants to address this matter himself. So I only think it’s fair I don’t say anything more than that other than to say this question is a legitimate question as to why can’t we with the science capacity we have and infrastructure in South Africa produce our own vaccine. But it’s a matter for the big chief not me, the president want to address in the next couple of weeks.”

Nzimande also slammed disinformation around COVID-19 vaccines including the use of 5G.
