CAIR fires senior Ohio official for spying

By Staff Writer
17:12:2021

On Thursday, the Centre for Islamic American Relations (CAIR) fired its executive head of its Ohio chapter, Romin Iqbal, for “egregious professional and ethical violations.”

Iqbal, according to many, had been ever-present at charitable events organised by the NGO and had assisted Ohio Muslims in cases dealing with Islamophobia and discrimination in the workplace amongst others, had, for 13 years, had been secretly passing emails, recordings and strategic plans to the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT). The IPT’s founder Steven Emmerson has been accused by the influential Southern Poverty Law Centre of being a known Islamophobe.

When Iqbal was confronted with the information, which has since been passed to the FBI and other police agencies, he allegedly admitted to it. “This is a violation of our privacy, civil rights and liberties as citizens of our country,” Nihad Awad, CAIR’s national executive director, said Thursday.
