Charges Laid Against SAPS by Lenasia South Residents

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-04-2017

Lenasia South residents have laid criminal charges against the South African Police Service (SAPS) for firing rubber bullets during a protest against illegal land grabs in the area in which five people were injured.

The Community took to the streets this morning, barricading the K43 Road near Ennerdale with burning tyres and rocks.

Residents say land which has been left unoccupied for 15 years have been invaded by people who have built shacks.

There was a tense standoff between the residents and police.

Shirley Brijlal, a reporter at a local newspaper says they were in a meeting when police suddenly opened fire.

“So I turned around to the policemen and said these guys are posturing with their guns, ask them to put those guns away…before you knew it they started shooting. It was unbelievable, there was nothing that was done that could provoke that kind of action.”

Gauteng Housing MEC Paul Mashatile is expected to address the community about the land issue.
