China has become one of the last major countries to congratulate Joe Biden on being elected U.S. president.

The Associated Press (AP) report that foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin says China respects the choice of the American people.

“We congratulate Mr. Biden and (vice presidential running mate) Ms. Harris.”

Wang adds the result will be confirmed according to U.S. laws and procedures.

Majority of Americans have chosen Biden to take over from Donald Trump as its 46th president.

Biden and Harris, the first black woman to be elected vice-president inherits a nation in turmoil, mainly because of COVID-19, racism and police brutality.

Since media called the race almost a week ago, Trump has not addressed the nation other than via Twitter and a written statement released to mark Veterans Day, and has not conceded to Biden, as is traditional once a winner is projected in a US vote.
