The collapse of the DA-led multi-coalition in Johannesburg saw Thapelo Amad of the small Al Jama-ah party voted into the mayoral role, unseating the DA’s Mpho Phalatse, which could be only the start of the collapse of other multi-party coalitions in Gauteng.

Amad’s position as mayor may be short-lived as he is believed to be just seen as a stand-in. At the same time, the ANC and EFF try to iron out a pact that would see Julius Malema’s party in charge of the Ekurhuleni municipality as the ANC returns to power in Johannesburg.

Radio Islam International discusses coalitions with political analyst Theo Venter.

According to Venter, the forming of sustainable coalition parties in South Africa is in its infancy.

Theo highlights that services in other countries continue despite the day’s politics.

“We need to develop a certain political maturity that we see in other countries,” he added.

Despite being 3/4 years of coalition, nothing tangible has been learnt which could carry us forward in the next era of politics within South Africa.
