COVID-19 Deaths Rise to 186, Infections Spike to 9,420 – Restriction Levels in COVID-19 Hotspots to be Assessed

Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 9,420

This is an increase of 525 from Friday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 8 bringing the total to 186

The Western Cape has the most infections with 4,809, followed by Gauteng at 1,910, KwaZulu-Natal 1,308, Free State 134, North West 41, Mpumalanga 61, Limpopo 51, Eastern Cape 1,078, Northern Cape 28 and unallocated infections 0.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 324,079 this is an increase of 16,327, which were done in the last 24 hours.

“We are saddened to report 8 new deaths, 7 from the Western Cape and 1 from KwaZulu Natal. We have also been advised that one of the deceased was a nurse at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. We pay special tribute to this health worker.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families and appreciation to the health workers who treated the patients.

Mkhize also says the level of restrictions in COVID-19 hotspots will be assessed.

“It is important to indicate Western Cape, in particular Cape Town, is a hot spot, this means higher rates of infection. Other hotspots include Johannesburg, Tshwanelo, Ekhurhuleni, eThekwini, Gingindlovu and Buffalo City. This means it’s going to require that these areas will need stricter restrictions.”

Mkhize has also announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit the Western Cape next Friday.
