COVID-19 Deaths Spike by 94 to 1,831, Infections Rise to 87,715

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 87,715

This is an increase of 3,825 from Thursday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 94 bringing the total to 1,831.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 48,706 followed by Gauteng at 17,261, Eastern Cape at 13,506, KwaZulu-Natal 4,548, Free State 658, North West 1,758, Mpumalanga 505, Limpopo 503, Northern Cape 218 and unallocated infections 52.

The total number of recoveries to date is 47,825 this translates to a recovery rate of 54.5%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,260,434 this is an increase of 32,336 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 94 COVID-19 related deaths- 27 from Gauteng, 7 from KwaZulu Natal, and 60 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 1,831. The mortality rate is 2,1%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
