COVID-19 Deaths Spike to 116, Infections Jump to 5,951

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 5,951.

This is an increase of 304 from Thursday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 13 bringing the total to 116.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 2,507, followed by the Gauteng at 1,507, KwaZulu-Natal 1,006, Free State 118, North West 34, Mpumalanga 35, Limpopo 34, Eastern Cape 691, Northern Cape 18 and unallocated infections 0.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 217,522 this is an increase of 9,992, which were done in the last 24 hours.

Mkhize also announced that the new figures for recoveries stand 2,382 as at 29 April.

“Regrettably, we are saddened to report a further 13 COVID-19 related deaths from the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape. This brings the total of COVID-19 related deaths to 116. As we have undertook to only report fully verified deaths, we would like to indicate that there has been a delay in assessing and verifying some of those reports.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families and appreciation to the health workers who treated the patients.
