COVID-19 Deaths Spike to 1,284, Infections Jump to 58,568

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 58,568.

This is an increase of 3,147 from Wednesday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 74 bringing the total to 1,284.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 37,422, followed by Gauteng at 7,953, Eastern Cape at 7,868, KwaZulu-Natal 3,472, Free State 406, North West 757, Mpumalanga 228, Limpopo 267, Northern Cape 132 and unallocated infections 63.

The total number of recoveries to date is 33,252, this translates to a recovery rate of 56.8%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,028,399 this is an increase of 29,999 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 74 COVID-19 related deaths: 39 from Western Cape, 31 from the Eastern Cape, and 4 from North West.This brings the total national deaths to 1284 with a mortality rate of 2,2%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families.
