COVID-19 Deaths Spike to 1,480, Infections Jump to 70,038

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 70,038.

This is an increase of 4,302 from Saturday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 57 bringing the total to 1,480

The Western Cape has the most infections with 42,539 followed by Gauteng at 11,164, Eastern Cape at 10,027, KwaZulu-Natal 3,874, Free State 495, North West 1,097, Mpumalanga 297, Limpopo 326, Northern Cape 156 and unallocated infections 63.

The total number of recoveries to date is 38,531, this translates to a recovery rate of 55%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,121,958 this is an increase of 34,071 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 57 COVID-19 related deaths: 42 from Western Cape, 10 from the Eastern Cape, and 5 from KwaZulu Natal. This brings the total national deaths to 1480 with a mortality rate of 2,1%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families.
