Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 3,465.

This is an increase of 165 from Monday’s announcement.

The number of deaths remains at 58.

Mkhize was visiting the Eastern Cape where there has been a rapid rise in the number of COVID-19 infections.

“The biggest risk of spread that has been identified is the cultural practices occurring at funerals.”

Gauteng has the most infections with 1,199, followed by the Western Cape at 1,010, KwaZulu-Natal 671, Free State 106, North West 24, Mpumalanga 24, Limpopo 27, Eastern Cape 345, Northern Cape 16 and unallocated infections 43.

Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 126,937 this is an increase of 5,427 from the last report.

He says they have also deployed senior officials from the National Department of Health to do a proper audit of the available personal protective equipment and other requirements.

This is to ensure the safety and adequate protection of our health workers who are at the forefront. We reiterate that no health worker should be exposed to the risk of infection.”

Mkhize says all health workers must be adequately trained on the infection prevention and control (IPC) and be protected at all times.
