The murder rate in South Africa has increased by 6.6% between October and December 2020.

Police minister Bheki Cele was addressing the media on Friday on the country’s latest crime statistics

He says 389 more people were killed compared to the same period last year.

“Mpumalanga province recorded the highest increase of 13.7%. Limpopo, North West and Northern Cape provinces recorded a decline in their murder cases.”

Cele says there has also been a 5% increase in reported sexual offences detected as a result of police action while 12,218 people were also raped between October and December last year.

Cele says 19 people were also killed in 18 incidents of murder which occurred on farms and small holdings.

He has also expressed concern on cash in transit robberies indicating that there was 66.7% hike in attacks on cash-in-transit vans.

Cele says police will in the coming days meet with the CEO’s of the Cash in Transit industry on the robberies.
