DA Asks SAHRC to Stop EFF’s Planned “Anti-Indian” March in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuizen says he has written to the Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to take action against the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) planned march in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday aimed at rousing anti-Indian sentiment.

Tensions have been running high in the province following the violent unrest and looting in South Africa last month.

The police have confirmed that 36 people were killed in the Phoenix area while twenty-two suspects have since been arrested and 112 illegal firearms seized from community members.

Steenhuizens says there are concerns the EFF’s march would escalate the already tense situation.

“What is evident from the material designed to promote what the EFF calls their “March to Phoenix Against Racist Indians” is that they are hoping to stir up racial tensions and inflame violence between black and Indian residents. This kind of destructive racial provocation is all the EFF offer in the way of political discourse, and it cannot be allowed to take hold.”

Steenhuizen says it is therefore imperative that the EFF march is stopped before it turns into a full-blown race war.
