Dagga Day’ Videos go Viral: 36 Learners Suspended

Umm Muhammed Umar

Leondale High School has suspended 36 pupils for having participated in a ‘Dagga Day’. Videos of the learners smoking dagga have gone viral.

A disciplinary hearing was held at the school on Monday, and parents have also met with teachers. Spokesperson for the Department of Education in Gauteng, Steve Mabona, said that an investigation would be launched into the incident, “and how it was allowed to happen”.

Meanwhile, according to IOL, several learners from Randfontein High School were earlier this month hospitalised, after having consumed space cakes sold by a Grade 12 learner. The Urban Dictionary defines ‘space cake’ as a baked food item, such as a cake or a brownie etc laced with hemp or another drug in order to get high while enjoying a tasty snack. Mabona said around 11 learners felt sick and needed medical attention.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, said that the Department urged learners not to purchase or consume unknown substances which put their health and lives at risk.”
