20 days into December 690 people have been killed on South African roads.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula released the preliminary festive season road safety stats on Tuesday.

He says while it is a 5.7% decline since last year, it is still a massive loss of life.

According to the minister law enforcement will be out in numbers during the festive season.

He urges people to take breaks on long journeys and stay stimulated during the drive.

He is also pleading that people not get behind the wheel if they have been drinking.

Meanwhile, there is a massive pile up on the N3 East between Pietermaritzburg and Ashburton as a container fell from a truck, three fatalities have been reported so far.
