Do not make Mischief in the Land

By Shaykh Alee bin Abdur Rahman Al Hudhayfee – Imaam of Haram

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared. Know that Allaah mentions in His Book that people are two categories: Some are righteous and promote righteousness. They are pleased with Allaah as their Lord, with Islaam as their religion and with Muhammad as their Prophet. Their Lord describes them with beautiful attributes. He says,

“And the (faithful) slaves of the Most Gracious (Allaah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness. And those who spend the night in worship of their Lord, prostrate and standing, and those who say: “Our Lord! Avert from us the torment of Hell. Verily its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment.” Evil indeed it (Hell) is as an abode and as a place to rest in. And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes). And those who invoke not any other ilaah (god) along with Allaah, nor kill such person as Allaah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse – and whoever does this shall receive the punishment. The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace; Except those who repent and believe (in Islaamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds; for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Al-Furqaan 25:62-70)

Allaah also says, “Verily those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah – Islaamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds; shall have the Gardens of Al-Firdaus (the Paradise) for their entertainment, wherein they shall dwell (forever). No desire will they have for removal therefrom.” (Al-Kahf 18:107-108)

Islaam’s goal is to make man reform himself through worshipping Allaah alone without associating any partner to Him. He says, “And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).” (Adh-Dhaariyaat 51:56)

Islaam also aims at making him reform the earth with Islaamic Monotheism, implement the law of Allaah, protect lives and properties, enjoin good and forbid evil. Allaah has promised those who reform that they would have no fear as regards what they are to face after death or in their future life. They would also not grieve over their children that they are living behind and they shall enter Paradise. Allaah says,

“O Children of Adam! If there come to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting to you, My Verses, then whosoever becomes pious and righteous, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Al-A’raaf 7:35)

Allaah also says, “And We send not the Messengers but as givers of glad tidings and as warners. So whosoever believes and does righteous good deeds, upon such shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Al-A’raaf 6:48)

Brethren in faith! Allaah has put the earth aright by sending Messengers and revealing Books. He also set the affairs of the earth aright through the followers of the Messengers. Deviation from the path of the Messengers therefore means causing mischief in the land. Allaah says,

“And do not mischief on the earth after it has been set in order; that will be better for you, if you are believers.” (Al-A’raaf 7:85)

The mischievous man altered, rebelled, disobeyed and followed the path of Satan. He committed idolatry, shed innocent blood, destroyed other people’s properties, and committed adultery and obscenities. The recompense of the mischievous is therefore, a disgrace in this world and in the Hereafter. Allaah says,

“Those who disbelieved and hinder (men) from the Path of Allaah, for them We will add torment over the torment because they used to spread corruption (by disobeying Allaah themselves, as well as ordering others (mankind) to do so).” (An-Nahl 16:88)

Allaah also says, “And of mankind there is he whose speech may please you (O Muhammad (peace be upon him)) in this worldly life, and he calls Allaah to witness as to that which is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome of the opponents. And when he turns away (from you “O Muhammad (peace be upon him)”), his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle, and Allaah likes not mischief. And when it is said to him, “Fear Allaah”, he is led by arrogance to (more) crime. So enough for him is Hell, and worst indeed is that place to rest!” (Al-Baqarah 2:204-206)

The most surprising thing is that when these mischief-makers are admonished and asked to return to the truth and repent, they persist in their mischief. Allaah says, “And when it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “We are only peace-makers.” Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.” (Al-Baqarah 2:11-12)

This behaviour is a sign of corruption of the heart. Allaah says, “And whomsoever Allaah wants to put in Al-Fitnah (error, because of his rejecting of Faith), you can do nothing for him against Allaah. Those are the ones whose hearts Allaah does not want to purify (from disbelief and hypocrisy); for them there is a disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a great torment.” (Al-Maaidah 5:41)

As regards the worldly punishment of the mischief-makers who wage wars against Allaah and His Messenger, Allaah explained that in His Book when He says, “The recompense of those who wage war against Allaah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off from opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter.” (Al-Maaidah 5:33)

Are these people pleased with this unenviable situation of theirs? What do they want to achieve from these acts of mischief? Do they want worldly benefits when they know that acts of treachery, destruction and terrorizing bring nothing but destruction to life? Are they aiming at attaining Paradise when Paradise cannot be attained by killing innocent Muslims and non-Muslims who live under the protection of a Muslim state or by disobeying Allaah and His Messenger and the constituted Muslim authority? These acts of theirs are deeds of the dwellers of Hell. Allaah says,

“And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allaah is Most Merciful to you. And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, We shall cast him into the Fire, and that is easy for Allaah.” (An-Nisaa 4:29-30)

Allaah says, “And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him.” (An-Nisaa 4:93)

The Messenger of Allaah said, “He who kills a non-Muslim who lives under the protection of the Muslim state shall not perceive the aroma of Paradise.” Allaah says, “O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad (peace be upon him)) and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority.” (An-Nisaa 4:59)

Do these individuals seek to create anarchy, spread terror, severe ties with parents and relatives and destruct their nation? Let them remember the saying of Allaah, “Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship? Such are they whom Allaah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight.” (Muhammad 47:22-23)

If these mischievous individuals are receiving and implementing orders blindly without giving any thought to the terrible consequences of their actions, how can they be satisfied with suspending the blessing of intelligence with which Allaah endowed them? Are those who issue orders to them greater in their sights than Allaah and His Messengers or are they more important than those who are in authority? Do they feel at ease that these devils who command them to perpetrate crimes will not plunge them into the pit of Hell? There is no doubt behind these filthy acts is the worst of all mischief-makers though he may seek to misled the deluded. Allaah says,

“(Their allies deceived them) like Shaitân (Satan), when he says to man: “Disbelieve in Allaah.” But when (man) disbelieves in Allaah, Shaitân (Satan) says: “I am free of you, I fear Allaah, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!” (Al-Hashr 59:16)

If these mischief-makers have interpretations to the texts of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah that are unknown to the Prophet’s companions, their successors and all other scholars of the Ummah, let them come out from their holes and debate with the erudite scholars. ‘Umar ibn Abdil-‘Azeez said, “If a group of people gather secretly upon a matter of this religion, they are upon an error.”

O Muslim youth! Why you are not thinking? Can’t you draw lessons from what happened to the Ummah in its long history at the hands of the leading heretics and trouble-makers? Was murder of Uthmaan RA not a product of these heresy and misguided ideas? Was ‘Ali RA not fought by the Khawaarij as a result of the similar ideologies carried by the modern day mischief-makers? Was the sacred House of Allaah not attacked under the influence of erroneous thinking?

How great and perfect is Islaam that it makes revolt against constituted authority a forbidden act! Islaam regards anyone who revolts against the authority and dies in that state as dying in the state of ignorance. Allaah says,

“And verily, this is my Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path. This He has ordained for you that you may become pious.” (Al-An’aam 6:153)

Brethren in Islaam! Fear Allaah as He should be feared. Beware of crises and afflictions for they harm religious and worldly life. Adhere to the congregation of the Muslims, for Allaah’s Allaah is with the congregation. He who isolates himself will cast himself to Hell. Hold fast unto your religion for it is a guarantee against all undesirables. Allaah says,

“And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur’aan), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allaah’s Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islaamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allaah makes His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.” (Aal ‘Imraan 3:103)

The Messenger of Allaah said, “The whole religion is a matter of sincerity and well-wishing.” They asked, “Towards whom?” He replied, “Towards Allaah, His Book, His Messenger and towards the leaders of the Muslims and the Muslims in general.” (Muslim)

Fellow Muslims! Stand untied against this crisis which its proponents killed innocent souls, destroyed properties and harm the religion. Be among the hosts of Allaah and His Messenger and follow the path of the congregation of the believers.
