Do Some Muslims Treat Reverts With Disdain?

Faizel Patel – 08-06-2018

As Radio Islam’s Ramadan drama “Family” intensifies, questions have been raised about whether Muslims are accepting of reverts and those that have entered the fold of Islam.

Although fictional, but mimics reality, in episode 15 of “Family”, the two daughter-in-laws Farida and Amina gossip and wonder whether their brother-in-law’s new wife Kate van Niekerk who reverted to Islam actually follows the tenets of the religion.

Referring to Kate as the “dory (white) daughter-in-law” Farida and Amina comment about whether the new daughter-in-law even makes istinja (ablution after relieving yourself) which was overheard by Kate.

Providing analyses on the scene, Radio Islam’s Ml Yusuf Omar and Ml Habib Bobat say the statements by the Farida and Amina are unfortunate.

“Unfortunately when you are a revert and on top of it you come from a different race group it’s not easy to settle into another family circle and you find these challenges. It’s really heart-breaking to see how we treat people from outside of our circle and its not becoming of a Muslim to do so.”

Ml Omar says while the efforts and needs to spread the message of Islam is fervently propagated, people share duplicitous views once reverts enter the fold of Islam.

“When the people enter Islam than all of sudden we’re acting different. We act as if our people will have our own Jannah and every revert will have a different type of Jannah. It’s not like that.”

Ml Omar says people must understand the beauty of Islam and take lessons from the drama by putting themselves in Kate shoes, when accepting Islam and expecting a warm welcoming family but treated with complete contempt by her fellow sister-in-laws.

Ml Habib says Muslims fulfilling their duties of making Islam comfortable for new reverts and non-Muslims who’ve entered the fold and by maintaining family ties will be abundantly rewarded by Allah.
