Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says her department has begun an investigation into what some matric pupils have called an ‘impossible’ math question.

This week, the Grade 12 class of 2022 wrote math paper 2 amongst their other final exams.

However, matriculants across the country raised concerns over Question 5 in the math exam questioning the accuracy of the math equation.

Motshekga says the Department of Basic Education (DBE) will make an announcement soon on the findings of its investigation into the accuracy of the math equation.

National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa)’s Basil Manuel says he hopes that the results will bring relief to the students.

“It is a small error and I certainly hope the minister is going to give an indication that the pupils will be given the benefit of the doubt. Our appeal as the teacher union is that we need to protect the mental health of our children; they don’t need more stress. We hope that what the minister will say will bring some calm to the situation,” said Manuel.

The question was worth seven marks as fears grow that it could affect the pupils’ grades.
