Elderly Woman Claims of Abuse at Steve Biko Academic Hospital

Sameera Baba, 2016-05-10

A 52-year-old woman has allegedly been assaulted at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Tshwane

Tryphina Mkwe from Sunnyside was admitted to the hospital last month for jaundice with a laparotomy scheduled for two days later. But in that period she had become too weak for surgery.

Mkwe claims she had been verbally abused and physically assaulted when she fell on her knees while trying to go to the bathroom.

Her daughter Enika Pitso says her mother had been called lazy and told to stop acting like a child.

“I am talking here of a woman who walked into hospital alive and well, but who suddenly got so sick she could hardly eat.”

Health Department spokesman Steve Mabona says they are concerned about the allegations.

“Our priority is to our patients and all our health professionals are always reminded of the same”
