Formula One Muslim Driver Might Skip Fast Ahead of Canadian GP

Faizel Patel, 2016-06-12

While some Muslims will be relaxing and taking it easy during Ramadan, Formula One’s only Muslim driver will be speeding around the race track at speeds of more than 350km/h.

Indonesia’s Rio Haryanto is observing Ramadan at the Canadian Grand Prix but will take safety advice on whether to fast before today’s race.

His manager Piers Hunnisett recognised there were concerns that the lack of food and fluids could affect the 23-year-old’s concentration.

“Rio has been fasting this week but the team and his physio will decide what to do on Sunday,” he told Reuters on Saturday. “It’s a long race and there is a worry about dehydration.”

Hunnisett says drivers lose a lot of body fluid during a race and they don’t want Haryanto losing concentration.

“It’s more of a safety issue. He has been following his faith in Montreal this week but we will see what the advice of the team doctors is. But on Monday he will be fasting again.”

The Manor Racing rookie is the first Indonesian on the starting grid, has been observing fasting which requires Muslims to abstain from food, drink and smoking from dawn to dusk.

According to Islamic ruling, Haryanto is exempt from fasting because he is a traveller, but he has to make up for the missed fast later.
