French Newspaper to Release Comic Book About Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 2012-12-31

A French weekly satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, who is known for publishing cartoons of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) plans to release a comic book on Wednesday about Islam's founder and last prophet of Allah.

The biography was put together by a Franco-Tunisian researcher known only as Zineb.

The newspaper has on several occasions depicted Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in an effort to defend free speech and defy the anger of Muslims around the world who believe depicting Muhammad (PBUH) is sacrilegious. It said the comic book will be researched and educational.

Charlie Hebdo's publisher and the comic's illustrator, who goes by the name Charb, said "It is a biography authorised by Islam since it was edited by Muslims.

He said he got the idea for the comic book in 2006 when a newspaper in Denmark published cartoons of Muhammad (PBUH).The newspaper republished the cartoons drawing angry protests across the Muslim world.

Charb said, “Before having a laugh about a character, it's better to know him. As much as we know about the life of Jesus, we know nothing about Mohammed. I don't think higher Muslim minds could find anything inappropriate.”

Charlie Hebdo is no stranger to controversy. In September the newspaper published cartoons of a naked Muhammad (PBUH) while violent protests were erupting in several countries over a low-budget film made in the United States that insulted Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Charb who has received death threats lives under police protection. In 2011 Charlie Hebdo's offices were hit by a firebomb and its website pirated after publishing an edition titled "Charia Hebdo" featuring several Muhammad (PBUH) cartoons.
