Gauteng Health Department Official Dies in Hospital After Being Shot at Home

Faizel Patel – 24/08/2021

A  Johannesburg mother has died in hospital after being shot outside her home South of Johnnesburg after dropping of her child at school.

Gunmen opened fire on Babita Deokaran on Monday morning after she returned from the school run.

Deokaran was a senior finance official at the Gauteng Health Department which is under investigation for corruption and fraud in the procurement for personal protective equipment (PPE).

Gauteng Health spokesperson Kwarra Kekana says the department is shattered by the killing of Deokaran.

“The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is at a loss for words at this brutal and tragic passing. Ms Babita Deokaran was an invaluable member of the Gauteng Health team, she rose up the ranks in the public service, in the last three decades, after she joined as an Accounting Clerk. She went on to become Chief Director: Financial Accounting at the Gauteng Department of Health and at times acted as the Chief Financial Officer.”

Gauteng Health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi has called on police to speed up investigations to apprehend the criminals behind Deokaran’s murder.
