Gauteng Health MEC Applauds Health Workers as SA Marks One Year Since First COVID-19 Case

As the country marks a year since the outbreak of COVID-19, Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi has commended healthcare workers for their bravery in the fight against the pandemic.

Today marks exactly one year since Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed the country’s first Coronavirus case

Mkhize announced that a 38-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man who had just returned from Italy had tested positive for the virus.

Mokgethi’s spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says frontline healthcare workers’ dedication and commitment to serve the nation remains unmatched and the country owes them a debt of gratitude for going beyond the call of duty.

“The view of the MEC is that among the many positives that have emerged in the fight against this particular pandemic is how the Gauteng province has been able to ensure that its comprehensive health response the COVID-19 pandemic also addresses legacy issues beyond the pandemic when it comes to the public health infrastructure.”

Mokgethi reiteratted the call to the public to continue doing everything in our power to protect ourselves and those around us by preventing and reducing further COVID-19 infections through regular washing of hands, social distancing and wearing a mask.
