Gauteng Hits the 150,000 Mark as National Infections Rise to 421,996

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 421,996.

This is an increase of 13,944 from Thursday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 250 bringing the total to 6,343.

Gauteng has the most infections with 153,020 followed by Western Cape at 90,011, Eastern Cape at 71,338, KwaZulu-Natal 57,162, Free State 14,542, North West 16,548, Mpumalanga 9,756, Limpopo 6,394, Northern Cape 3,175 and unallocated infections 50.

The total number of recoveries to date is 245,771 which translates to a recovery rate of 58%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 2,684,488 this is an increase of 52,382 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 250 COVID-19 related deaths: 13 from Eastern Cape, 139 from Gauteng, 50 from KwaZulu Natal, 47 from Western Cape and 1 from the Free State. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 6,343.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
