Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers has renovated a disused wing at the Settlers Hospital in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape into a 20-bed dedicated COVID-19 isolation facility to the tune of R750 000.

The official handover took place on Tuesday.

Gift of the Givers says it will also provide the beds, mattresses, blankets, pillows, linen, fridge, microwave and urn and other equipment.

Speaking to Power FM, the organisations CEO Dr Imtiaz Sooliman says the renovations follows a resurgence of Coronavirus cases in the province.

“It shows what you can do if you work together. The mayor was here this morning, the district manager from the Health Department was here, it was excellent. Now you have a fantastic facility where you can keep twenty new patients inside this hospital, they don’t have to go anywhere else.”

Gift of the Givers says it has already set up a 120-bed COVID-19 facility at Bhisho Hospital.

It says construction teams will be carrying out a R3 million renovation to provide accommodation for medical professionals to reside on site thus increasing staff availability at the facility.
