A California firm is investigating a massive hack said to have affected 150,000 of its security cameras.

AFP reports a US hacker collective claimed to have tapped into camera footage from security cameras at banks, jails, schools, carmaker Tesla and other sites to expose “the surveillance state.”

Images captured from hacked surveillance video were posted on Twitter with an #OperationPanopticon hashtag.

The hacker group claimed to have ferreted out credentials of a high-level administrator account at Silicon Valley firm Verkada, which runs a platform operating security systems online.

Verkada says they are “investigating the scale and scope of hack adding that it has notified law enforcement and companies that rely on its platform.
