Protea’s cricketer and opening batsman Hashim Amla says fasting during the month of Ramadan has helped him with his conditioning.

Amla is currently in England with the Protea’s cricket team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Ramadan which is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, is a time to reflect, sacrifice and aspire to be a better Muslim.

While fasting can take a toll on an active and professional sportsmen, Amla says he always looks forward to fasting.

“Fasting is something I always look forward to, it’s probably the best month of the year for me. Whenever we are playing cricket during that time, especially during training sessions, physically you do feel thirsty and hungry, but for me it’s a great mental exercise, but most importantly it’s a great spiritual exercise as well.”

During Ramadan Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, the month ends with the culmination of the day of Eid.

Others in the Protea’s team who are fasting include Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi and team manager Dr. Mohammed Moosajee.
