Heatwave to Hit Parts of South Africa

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-11-09

The South African Weather Service is warning hot and dry conditions are expected to last at least until Friday with temperatures in some areas reaching above 40 degrees.

Although restrictions haven’t yet been implemented in Johannesburg, Tshwane has called on residents to conserve water.

There’s a small possibility of rain for the next few days.

Forecaster Bransby Bulo said, “We’ve issued an advisory of heatwave conditions that will persist until Friday in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

TIPS FROM ER24

Paramedics have advised people to take precautions against heat stroke and to avoid outdoor activity when possible.

ER24 has shared the following tips:

• Stay well hydrated by drinking a lot of water.

• Keep a close eye on babies, the elderly and children and ensure they stay well hydrated.

• Ensure pets have a cool place to relax and cool clean water to drink as well.

• Try to stay out of direct sunlight.

• Wear the appropriate clothing and use sunscreen.

• Limit participation in outdoor activities. If you plan on participating in outdoor activities, ensure you rest and keep hydrated.

• If you are going to spend time in a pool, ensure your safety and that of children around you. Ensure that they are supervised while around and in the pool.

• Do not leave children and pets in a vehicle, even with a window open.

ER24’s Chitra Bodasing says it’s important to monitor people with any symptoms that may lead to heat stroke.

Signs or symptoms of severe heat stroke or exhaustion include severe headache, weakness or disorientation, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps or severe thirst.

“Persistent symptoms should be taken seriously and medical assistance should be sought.” – Eyewitness News
