How the Eco-Mobility Festival Will Affect You

Radio Islam News Team: 02/10/2015

On Monday, the 4th of October 2015, the Eco-Mobility World Festival 2015 will officially open, in the Sandton CBD, Johannesburg.

To give residents, businesses and commuters a taste of both the history and the future of mobility, the festival will host a world-class, international Eco-Mobility Exhibition where exhibitors will display their innovative solutions, including the likes: fun, effortless and fast devices to get from A to B such as electrified unicycles, segways, push-scooters, skateboards and e-Bikes; smart next generation pedal cycles, solar powered waste removal systems; and micro-electric vehicles for use as a taxi-cab service.

What will the transport management plan during the Eco-Mobility Festival around Sandton entail?

Travelling to and from Sandton CBD will be affected both internally in the central area (referred to as the footprint area) as well as externally on many of the access routes to and from this central point.

The city is urging those who are in a position to use public transport to do so during the Festival periods and beyond. It is anticipated that the implementation of the Transport Management plan and the greater use of public transport will result in quicker journey times than using private vehicles to travel into and out of the Sandton Footprint area.

What will be different coming into Sandton?
People who use public transport or cycle will be given priority access during the Eco-Mobility World Festival where possible. Various transport elements have been introduced to enhance the travel experience of those choosing to make use of sustainable transport offerings in operation during the period of the event. These offerings comprise both services that regularly operate on a day-to-day basis as well as top-up services being made available for the Festival period.

There will also be a dedicated cycling route as the City of Johannesburg is committed to making it safe, attractive and feasible to cycle to work and school. It is introducing a number of cycle lanes in different parts of the city. Permanent cycling lanes are being built in West and Maude Streets in Sandton as well as between Sandton and Alexandra and will be constructed between Sandton and Rosebank over the next two years.

For the Eco-Mobility World Festival, four pop-up cycle lanes will be created, making it safer and easier to cycle to Sandton. The routes are as follows

•    From Rosebank, via fricker Acenue
•    From morningside via West, South and Grayston; from Field of Study Area via 14th, 12th
      and 11th Street

•    From Pick n Pay on William Nicol and Republic via 14th, 12th and 11th Street
•    From Alexandra via Rautenbach and Grayston

Park and Ride Services
Dedicated park and ride facilities will be in operation for the duration of the festival. Commuters can park their vehicles at these locations and then use public transport and alternative transport to travel into Sandton. Some of these Park and Rides will continue to be available after the festival.
This is a summary of the various park and ride locations as well as details on operations and pricing.
