IFP Wants Discussions on Bringing Back Death Penalty in SA

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 06-09-2018

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) says it’s concerned about high contact crime in the country indicating it may be time for South Africa to talk about the death penalty.

The IFP was speaking on the side-lines following the discovery of a missing school boy in a shallow grave in Phoenix on Tuesday.
While police have not yet officially confirmed that the body is that of young 9-year old Miguel Louw who went missing on July 17, several people close the family and relatives took to social media to confirm the news that nobody wanted to.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the IFP’s Narend Singh says that violent contact crime such as rape and murder are out of control in South Africa.

Singh says many of the party’s constituents have suggested that the death penalty should be considered as some sentences do not fit the serious crimes being committed.

“So we said to ourselves as a party let us ask parliament and the government to have a national discourse on the question of the death penalty, whether it will be a deterrent so that people who I would quote, unquote animals who commit these kind of heinous and dastardly acts.”

Singh says while the death penalty is unconstitutional, there can be amendment to the constitution by the review committee to include capital punishment.
