Islamic Human Rights Council Condemns Teachers Showing of Cartoon of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH)

Protesters gathered outside Batley Grammar School in West Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom, foe a second day on Friday, after a teacher showed a cartoon of the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, wearing a turban in the shape of a bomb, to learners. The school had earlier this week announced it would be closed after the incident.

Arab News reports that Former Conservative Cabinet Minister, Baroness Warsi said, “Unfortunately, this matter has been hijacked by extremists on both sides to kind of create this culture war. What we’re forgetting is the most important party in all of this, which is the kids and their learning.” She added, “It’s obvious that many pupils were left distressed because of what happened.”

Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, meanwhile, condemned the protests, saying he “effectively accuses concerned parents of violence against the school and making threats.” The Islamic Human Rights Commission has asked him to retract his statements. The IHRC said video footage of the parents’ protest outside the school did not support Williamsons claims, adding, “These claims firstly distract from the core issue — what appears to be a deliberate racist and humiliating provocation by a teacher against Muslim pupils. Secondly, they demonize Muslim parents, students and the community in general.”

Arab News reports that some protesters have vowed to continue to demonstrate until the teacher in question was dismissed. Both the school and the teacher, who has since been suspended, have apologized to parents.

Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary Kate Green, said, “I’m pleased conversations are taking place so in future teaching of these subjects can be done in a respectful manner.” Meanwhile, Qari Asim, an Imam at Makkah Mosque in Leeds feared that if the protests did not end, it would fan the flames of Islamophobia.

The protests have thus far been peaceful, but West Yorkshire police officers are nevertheless present. Last year a teacher in France had been beheaded for showing a class the derogatory cartoons, which had originated with the French Charlie Hebdo magazine, depicting the Prophet Muhammed, Peace be Upon Him.
