Israel Knesset to Vote on Sunday on Anti-Netanyahu Government

Israeli lawmakers are expected to vote today on a coalition government of bitter ideological rivals united by their determination to banish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from power.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid informed the country’s president Reuven Rivlin  earlier this month that he can form a coalition government, a move that would bring an end to Netanyahu’s 12 years in power.

Israel’s new coalition deal was signed by eight party leaders.

AFP reports, the Knesset vote will either terminate the Netanyahu’s uninterrupted tenure or return Israel to a stalemate likely to trigger a fifth general election since 2019.

The Israel Prime Minister who is battling a swathe of corruption charges in an ongoing trial he dismisses as a conspiracy, has pushed Israeli politics firmly to the right over the years.

On Friday, all coalition agreements had been signed and submitted to the Knesset secretariat, Yamina announced, a moment party leader Naftali Bennett said brought “to an end two and a half years of political crisis”.

Under the coalition agreement, Bennett, the 49-year-old tech millionaire and Lapid would rotate the role of prime minister, with Bennett taking up the post for the first two years and Lapid the final two.
