Joburg Emergency Services on High Alert as Cold Snap Invades Gauteng

Johannesburg emergency service says it will be on high alert this weekend as a cold front hits the Gauteng province.

The SA Weather Service has warned that cold weather conditions will start to invade the central parts of the country during Friday with maximum temperatures dropping significantly to the mid-teens.”

It says these conditions are expected to reach KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng on Saturday and Sunday.

Johannesburg Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi says the drop in temperatures means that most of the residents of the city of Johannesburg will be exposed to extremely cold temperatures forcing them to use heating and lighting appliances to try to warm themselves, which may be dangerous if used unsafely.

“We just want to encourage all our residents throughout the city of Johannesburg to look after their heating devices, things like heaters, paraffin stoves, candles and not to leave them unattended while in use so we be able to prevent fire incidents at home.”

He says the main focus will be on the 189 informal settlements throughout the city since they are the most vulnerable to fire incidents when there are cold weather conditions.

Mulaudzi says the City of Johannesburg Disaster Management Centre will be operational throughout the weekend and Disaster Management Monitoring teams have been dispatched to all seven regions of the City to monitor any eventuality, which might occur.
