Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says Northcliff High School in Johannesburg has agreed to withdraw a concession card handed to female pupils indicating they had permission to wear the headscarf.
Abeedah Adam posted a complaint on Facebook on Monday that her daughter had to carry the card to wear a headscarf at the school.
“How is this different from the Dompas Black South Africans had to carry in the past.”
Social cohesion activist Yusuf Abramjee asked Lesufi to probe the matter saying the permit requirements are ridiculous.
Lesufi responded saying he spoke to the principal of the school who agreed to withdraw the concession card.
“It is a practice of the school for past 20 years to issue them for any deviation from the school uniform. Example learners with beards, wearing tekkies, health reasons. I explained to him how negative and divisive it now reflects in the public eye. “
In terms of the constitution and as noted in guidelines, schools should not prohibit attire such as yarmulkes (Jewish headgear) tophee (Islamic headgear males) and headscarves if they form part of religious practice or obligation.
